Welcome to our Security Modes of Operation module. If a system users either the Biba or the Bell- LaPadula Model, it is known as a multilevel security system. This is because the system can process and access data, that is at different classification levels. Users with different clearance levels are able to access the system.
This system can support multiple levels, such as top secret, secret and confidential. And users with similar levels of security clearance, such as a top secret clearance or a confidential clearance. Users are granted or denied access to resources, based on the classification level of the resource, and based on the level of classification of the individual that is attempting to access that resource.
With a system that has a dedicated security mode, there's only one level on that system. Any authenticated users that use that system, have clearance to access all of the data on the system, and also have a need to know to access that data. With compartmented security mode systems, we still have only one level on the system, however some data is restricted, and the user needs to go through a formal approval process to prove that they have a need to know specific information.
System high mode is a system with mixed levels and labels on one system. Users will be required to have a need to know to access some data, and users have to posses a clearance equal to the systems highest object. For example, if the system maintains top secret data, no users will be permitted to access the data unless they have a top secret clearance.
We can see at the bottom an example of dedicated security mode, where an individual is able to access all of the documents, because they have clearance and they are an authenticated user on the system. To the right we can see that the compartmented security mode, the user requires a need to know, as well as an approval and a security clearance.
So here the user has approval and need to know for the top two documents. And although they have a security clearance able to access the document at the bottom, they do not have the approval and need to know to access that document, so therefore they are not permitted to access it.
